Queue Length Surveys (Q)
Queue length surveys are used to measure traffic volumes, providing gratuitous of congestion and delays. They are carried out for each lane of each junction arm. The data can be provided either by number of vehicles or in vehicle lengths or class.
Traffic modelers need queue length surveys to measure delays and congestion at junctions. They can be carried out for one or more of an intersection’s arms. When multiple lanes are present, the data for vehicles in each separate lane or in only the longest queue can be recorded. This is often needed for traffic modeling to ascertain whether the junction is efficient or whether a junction improvement scheme is needed.
Queue length at junctions may be measured in vehicle numbers or in meters or yards depending on which is specified.
The number of vehicles in the queue as the red traffic signal changes to green may be recorded, or data may be collected at regular intervals such as every five minutes. Queue length surveys are often carried out in conjunction with turning count surveys.
Importance of Queue length survey:
Queue length Surveys provide detailed information relating to the length of queues that vehicles on each arm are experiencing at a specific intersection at certain peak times of the day, it is a great accompaniment to an intersection count. As always, we undertake these surveys using HD Video Surveillance cameras. Depending upon the client’s requirement we can supply different queues. This includes maximum queue & minimum queue in any interval, Average queue length, Queue at the start of Green phase and Queue delay surveys etc. We even have experience of tracking the queue back from one exit of the motorway to the other using multiple cameras.
